Most all of us go or have gone to a workplace or school that filters the internet. And if you have not consider yourself lucky. I am going to show you A) Popular proxies that are probably blocked by powerful content filtering systems B) How to find likely unblocked proxies via google and C) When all else fails how to set up your own proxy.

If your school or work spends money on their IT department then they will probably have a nice server side content filtering program. For example my schools content filtering program is called Lightspeed Systems. Lightspeed crawls sites and categorizes them and the network administrator decides what categories to have unblocked. That is the easiest and most comment form of content filtering. If your network administrator has too much time on their hands they will “blacklist” sites. This means that they will make a list of sites that are blocked. And the final form of content filtering is a “whitelist”. This is the opposite form of blacklisting. Your network administrator makes a list of sites that you can visit. If a site is not on the list, tough luck.

Now if all those proxies are blocked you can try a google search. The proxies you will find with google are usually private and slow if a lot of people are using them. Here are the directions:

1. Open up www.google.com
2. In the search bar type in inurl:nph-proxy.pl OR inurl:nph-proxy.cgi OR inurl:nph-*.pl OR inurl:nph-*.cgi
3. Hit enter
4. Search thought the results. It may take a while to find a working one but it it probably won’t be blocked.

C)

Now your absolute final solution short of calling the net admin and asking to get the site unblocked is setting up your own proxy. This is a little complicated but its not that hard.

Go out and find a free web hosting service that supports perl and CGI. Here are a few:

http://www.spaceports.com/

Those are just a few. Do some searching and find one. Now be careful and don’t download large files cause you will eat up your alloted bandwidth. These have enough bandwidth to just browse not to download.

Now that you have your hosting account lets install the proxy. The Proxy im going to use is CGIProxy 2.0.1. Its pretty powerful and its my favorite. I am going to show you how to use the automated CGIProxy installer found here.
1. Click Start

2. Choose CGIProxy

CGIProxy Auto Install link
3. Choose v2.0.1.0006 -stable

CGIProxy Auto Install Version
4. Fill out the information with the information provided to you buy your host

5. Chose any advanced settings you want

6. Finnish the install and go to your domain.

For example I put myfreehosting.com as my domain name so you would go to myfreehosting.com/cgi-bin/nph-proxy.pl (or .cgi depending on your servers configuration) and then you would start using the proxy.

One that is left off of the list, and is likely not to be blocked, is https://proxify.com This one uses https instead of http. I have not found it to be blocked or trackable through any of my school’s firewalls.

Good post for those who resides in school compound, restricted by the Computer (IT) Centre regulation. Still, with the proxy tunnelling, users may only be able to utilise certain TCP / UDP ports.

Using https like https://flyproxy.com is the best idea for security and the information you transfer will be encrypted plus they are less likely to be blocked due to traffic being transfered over port 443 instead of port 80 where most website blockers monitor.

Just for your knowledge, proxies such as those that have more then 5 people using that, will completely destroy even some decent servers. Your provider will quickly notice that you are consuming 50% of the cpu power at times, and will quickly remove your account.

To Josh Porter:

Many sites that use secure servers will not be blocked (such as Gmail) but my school has disallowed access to any secure server. Just a heads up that they can do that.

I might also point out that a lot of web hosts specifically prohibit proxies. Check before you buy!

Ian - you might want to mention to them that they’re blocking access to quite a few sites that use SSL for logins. This includes Yahoo mail, I believe…

Do you have a solution for WebSense blocking the phobos.apple.com links so that iTunes doesnt work - cant get to the music store and I cant use the radio…not to mention that I am not able to sync my podcasts….

Any ideas around this?

Just as a small heads up. As long as people post these sites on forums like these, they get blocked rather quickly. The proxify and flyproxy sites are very nice, but if you post these sites on forums, of all places, your technical team is going to get word of this. Please don’t be stupid in sharing smart information…

I work for a technical team, and this is exactly how I get all my information to block these sites, it would make my life so much easier to just catch someone on the site and block instead of finding them all.

I can’t believe there are people still trusting open proxies. For school and your amature surfings.. perhaps. In my company, whoever tries to bypass our proxy will be identified and fired, and if found transmitting confidential info, sued. Tread at own risk people. When you are not ‘caught’ doesn’t mean the techies manning the fort isn’t aware. It’s just a matter of time.

i was trying to set up my own proxy site with the tutorial you’ve provided but for some reason i cant get past the part where you enter all the information in. i registered on addyour.net and set up my account. but whenever i try to do the gather install info step, it says my username checksout but my password doesnt…i copied and pasted the password from the error-msg to the login at addyour.net and i was able to login, do you know what could be wrong? i need to make a proxysite becuase my school installed a sonic firewall-filter that blocks like all proxy sites and all gamesites.

I noticed you have my site there in your list. Although that link may be blocked you should try https://www.stealth-ip.net .com .org .info or .us. since most filters cannot block encrypted traffic the https:// allows you to bypass most filters. you cant just do this to regular sites because most of them don’t have ssl setup.

I was using secure connections (https) with great sucess for a while but my school seems to have found a way to block them. SSL and TLS are still enabled and i have access to some secure site still but the proxys are all blocked now. Does someone know how they block it and if there is a way to fix it. Also my friend discoverd that you can go https://www./stopthatblock.com, press enter then erase / after www. and for some reason it worked. Doesn’t work for stopthatblock anymore but maybe it works on other sites.

Maybe you should include the serach for other types of patterns, becasue most webproxies are running a php script, though the marshall/cgi version is still popular.

Hey great post. It’s always good to find new proxies as they continue to get banned by work and school administrators. I ran across browsejunk.com a couple of days ago and have been using it sense. Happy to report I have not had any issues accessing blocked sites from work through the proxy.
